FEBRUARY  2007

President’s report.   President’s Drivel 1/07

Welcome back for 2007, we have been open for the past 5 weeks and more and more survivors of the Xmas – New Year Festivities are appearing each week.

Sadly, a very new member, Len Smaile passed away on the 11th January.  Len was also involved with Old Gippstown as President of The West Gippsland Country Music Club. The Country Music Club will be holding a tribute day for Len at the Park on the 18th February from 1-5pm.

There has been a flurry of activity in the Clubhouse recently.  Laurie has a team building a cabinet to store our books (including those recently donated by Doug McCulloch) plus our magazines and videos.  Repairs to the portable stage for the Moe Jazz Festival’s ‘Jazz & GG’s Day’ to be held at the Moe Racing Club on 12th March are also well underway.  Ken Heppleston, after being re-stented recently, is back imparting his wood turning skills to new members Stephen Barling and Coral Thomsen.  John Tosin has very kindly offered to make safety screens for our 2 small lathes.

At this month’s meeting Park Manager Michael Fozard addressed us on some exciting building developments for the next year at Old Gippstown.  With more groups working in the Park and increasing visitor numbers, it means we too need to be a little more disciplined.  The keys to our workshop must be signed in and out, no cars parked in the Park (we can deliver materials/equipment then remove car to car park) and we should let the Park Management know that we are on site.  The easiest way to do this is enter through the Kiosk and let the staff know you are a Woody – a wave, flash your badge, a greeting.  I now enter through the Kiosk and I hope all members will eventually get into the habit because the time is coming where it will be mandatory.

Terry has organised a bus trip to GTR Abrasives, Woodworking Warehouse, Carbitool, etc arranged to depart Old Gippstown car park at 8:00am on Thursday 15th February.   Get you name on the blackboard fast if you would like to participate.

On our next meeting day (6th March) we have a special turning tutorial arranged to demonstrate the manufacture of a pepper grinder.  Don’t miss it!

I look forward to seeing you at the Club very soon.

Cheers, Kevin

Club Meeting, 6th February.

A total of 15 members attended our first meeting for the year.

The club welcomes new members Carol and Stephen and hope their stay is enjoyable.

Best wishes for speedy recoveries are sent to those on the sick list, Ken Heppleston, Frank Nicholls, Ivor Penny and Ken Morrison.

Guest speaker Michael Fozard, manager of Old Gippstown gave us an update as to the future plans for the park and it sure sounds as if it will be a busy place soon. Mike did remind members that cars are to only in the park for drop off and pick up reasons otherwise please park them outside. The cars do not go with the surrounding atmosphere. It was also requested that access to the park be via the main building. The main reason being that the park is aware of our attendance, mainly for safety reasons that may occur.

We thank Mike for his attendance and it should not be too hard to fall in line with these requests.

The bus trip to GTS and The Woodworking Warehouse has been confirmed for Thursday 15th February. Contact Terry to confirm your seat.

General business finished a good meeting.

SCROLL SAWING

Anybody that is interested in scroll sawing, or finding out about scrolling, or has any knowledge to pass on please contact Brian Pigdon on 56236852 or come to the club rooms on a Tuesday afternoon and chat him up!

There is a scroll saw network that is based in Horsham that is Australia wide and there are a few members in our own area. I am hoping to have a day or evening in our area to get these people together. Anybody that would like to come along and see what these talented people can do please contact me so we can work out where and when this can be done.

Helen Harris is the secretary of the network and she is also in Harris Traders of Horsham, contact number is 03-53826224. You can obtain supplies by mail, blades of all sorts are $4:50 per dozen pinless, $ 6:00 per dozen with pins for six packs or more plus postage. They also have a large range of books. I have just got another book by Patrick Speilman, full of good stuff.

Hope to hear from interested members {or not} soon.          Brian Pigdon.

Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight, dinner, soft music and dancing. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays. Henry Youngman.
